Ask most people about the Jewish experience in the Second World War and the Holocaust inevitably comes to mind. But there is another side to that history. In this episode of the Shpiel on Hamilton, journalist and author Aron Heller speaks about his new book, Zaidy’s Band, The Untold Stories of a Jewish Band of Brothers in World War II. Heller's book is a gripping account of the exploits of Jewish soldiers who fought for the Allies in World War II and war-weary veterans who went on to fight for Israel’s independence. This episode is a prelude to Heller's upcoming talk at JHamilton on Wednesday, Nov.19 at 7 p.m. The program will also spotlight local legend, David Goldberg, a Spitfire pilot who flew 235 missions before returning to a distinguished law career, and Alex Balinson, an airman whose untimely and tragic death in Malta was mourned by his father on the front page of Hamilton’s Yiddish newspaper.
